A WordPress site should clearly show what your business does and why it's worth using its services - even when a client is looking for answers through AI. GEO helps organize content and site accessibility and checks if the brand appears in questions relevant to your business.
A client asks the AI assistant about a company that will solve their problem. They receive several suggestions, compare specializations, and choose a provider they want to talk to. Does your brand appear on this list? Is the information about it accurate? Does your site provide arguments that help make a decision?
These are the questions worth starting with GEO for WordPress.
In this guide, we show how to check website availability, organize offers, plan useful content, and measure brand presence in AI. The material is intended for business website owners, bloggers, marketers, and agencies working with WordPress.
What is GEO for WordPress?
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, refers to actions aimed at enhancing brand presence and its content in AI system responses. These may include recommending the company and pointing to its site as a source of information.
For WordPress, working on GEO involves three areas
| Area | Main question | Example Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | Can the system reach public content? | Check indexing, robot access, and linking |
| Information | Does the page clearly address the user's need? | Clarification of the offer, guides, examples, and sources |
| Measurement | Does the brand appear with the right questions? | Monitoring responses, citations, visits, and inquiries |
WordPress provides the ability to implement these changes. However, simply choosing a CMS or installing an additional plugin does not guarantee recommendations by AI.
Does GEO replace SEO?
The basics of SEO remain important. Google indicates that presence in AI Overviews and AI Mode does not require special technical optimizations beyond standard search engine requirements. The site must be indexed and qualify for display with a content snippet. There is also no requirement to add a special text file 'for AI' or a separate GEO data schema.Google Documentation
Practically, this means a common foundation: accessible pages, useful information, and a clear site structure.
GEO expands the way we assess outcomes. In addition to positions and clicks, we check if the company appears in answers, how it is described, and which of its materials are cited.
Individual platforms may use different sources and mechanisms. Google's recommendations pertain to its AI features - results from other systems should not be conflated with them.
1. Start with the questions the client asks before purchasing
The first task is to determine which questions your company's presence would have business significance.
For agencies creating WordPress sites, these may include:
- How to choose an agency to create a company website?
- Who creates WordPress sites for service companies?
- What should ongoing maintenance of WordPress include?
- Is it better to rebuild an existing site or create a new one?
- How to prepare a company for migrating a site to WordPress?
The sources of topics should be sales conversations, requests for proposals, messages from clients, and search engine data.
Start by selecting 15-20 questions. This is a practical range for the first measurement, not a GEO requirement.
Separate questions containing the brand name from those without it:
| Question | What it allows to check |
|---|---|
| “What does agency X specialize in?” | Correctness of information about an already known company |
| “Which agencies create websites for law firms?” | Brand presence when searching for a supplier |
| “How to prepare a law firm’s website for reconstruction?” | Presence of expert content on a specific issue |
Just obtaining a response to a question containing the company name does not prove that AI will independently recommend it to a potential client.

2. Check visibility settings in WordPress
In the panel, go to Settings → Reading and check the option asking search engines not to index the site.
On the public page you want to promote, it should not be checked. WordPress documents that enabling it adds the directive noindex, nofollow. This setting does not secure the page from visitor access. WordPress Documentation
Then check a few specific addresses: the homepage, the main service, the guide, and the contact page.
| What to check | What problem are you looking for |
|---|---|
| Access without logging in | Public offer available only for logged-in users |
| Subpage indexing setting | Random noindex in SEO plugin settings |
| Canonical address | Indicating another, unrelated page as the main version |
| Site map | No important, published addresses |
| Robot access | Blocked by hosting, firewall, or bot protection |
| Internal links | Content that is not linked from anywhere on the site |
The canonical address helps indicate the preferred version of the same or very similar content. It's worth checking if the SEO plugin settings, sitemap, and linking are consistent. Google treats the canonical tag as a signal, not an absolute command.Canonical URL documentation
In Search Console, use URL Inspection. Just because a page opens correctly in the browser does not mean it has been indexed.
3. Distinguish search bots from training bots
Access for AI is not a single setting. Individual bots may serve different purposes.
OpenAI distinguishes among others:
- OAI-SearchBot - related to searching and presenting pages in ChatGPT search functions
- GPTBot - fetching content that can be used to train models
The settings for these bots are independent. You can allow access for OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot. Access alone does not guarantee the page will be chosen as a source.OpenAI bots documentation
If the site is managed by an agency or administrator, ask them to check specific bots in robots.txt, hosting configuration, and bot protection. General information that 'AI is unlocked' is not sufficient.
Also remember that robots.txt is used to manage resource fetching by bots. It does not secure confidential data and is not a reliable method for removing addresses from Google results.robots.txt documentation
4. Explain what the company does and whom it helps
Go to the homepage and read the first screen without looking at the logo. Is it clear what the company offers and who it works for?
Let's consider a fictional example:
“We create modern digital solutions that support business development.”
With such a description, it is difficult to assess the contractor's specialization.
A more specific message could be:
“We design WordPress sites for service companies. We prepare the offer structure, implement contact forms, and provide ongoing technical support.”
The reader receives the information needed for an initial assessment of fit.
On the services subpage, answer the questions:
- Who is the offer intended for?
- What problem does it solve?
- What does the cooperation include?
- What requires additional arrangements?
- What does the implementation look like?
- What do the price and deadline depend on?
- What experience confirms the company's competencies?
Instead of the term 'comprehensive service', specify the actual scope. Instead of 'years of experience', show specific implementations, if you can describe them publicly.
Also check the consistency of information on the 'About Us' page, in contact, and public company profiles. This is the basis for clear communication, not a formula guaranteeing AI recommendations.
5. Assign customer questions to the appropriate subpages
Not every question requires a new article. Sometimes the best solution is to supplement the existing offer or describe implementations.
Sample content map for a WordPress agency:
| Customer question | Best place for the answer |
|---|---|
| What does website maintenance include? | Service subpage |
| How much does WordPress maintenance cost? | Guide with calculation assumptions |
| What does the redesign of the company website look like? | Guide to the process |
| Does the agency know my industry? | Description of a specific implementation |
| How to start cooperation? | Offer and contact page |
This division makes it easier to create a service where the subsequent materials meet different needs.
Before writing a new text, check the blog archive. If there is already material addressing the same question, assess whether it is sufficient to update it. Ensure that each new article brings distinct value.
6. Create answers that can be used and verified
A useful guide helps the reader make a decision or complete a task.
A good working layout is:
- A direct answer to the main question
- Conditions that the solution depends on
- An example of application
- Data, sources, or a description of personal experience
- Limitations and common mistakes
- Next step
It is a way of organizing knowledge, not a confirmed recipe for citation by every AI system.
If you write about the costs of WordPress maintenance, explain which elements you include: updates, backups, monitoring, response time, or development work. The reader should understand why two offers may have different prices.
If you show improvement in website performance, describe the starting point, the scope of changes, and the measurement conditions. A picture with a good result does not explain what has been done.
A personal test, detailed example, or calculation with explicit assumptions gives the audience a reason to keep or recommend the material. Google also recommends evaluating content for originality, added value, and credibility.Guidelines for Helpful Content
7. Show authorship and ensure currency
The author's signature should lead to information that explains their connection to the topic.
For a WordPress guide, this could be experience in implementations, site administration, content design, or analytics. There is no need to create an extensive biography. It is important that the description is specific and true.
When updating an article, check:
- whether the instructions still match the tool's functionality
- whether the provided sources are available
- whether the offer description is current
- whether the screenshots do not show an outdated process
- whether the conclusions still follow from the presented data
Change the update date when the material has actually been verified or modified. A new date alone does not replace the work on the content.
8. Connect the blog with the offer and contact
The guide should lead to a logical next step.
On the service company's page, the path may look like this:
WordPress maintenance guide → scope of website care → inquiry form.
Meanwhile, the offer subpage may refer to a case study that shows a similar client issue.
Add links where they help to understand the topic. The description 'scope of WordPress care' says more about the destination page than the general 'click here'.
Check if the recipient can easily transition from advice to confirming the company's competence. Will they find a case study? Do they understand the scope of the service? Do they know how to contact?
In this way, the article can support both acquiring new recipients and conversations with those who are already considering collaboration.
9. Expand presence beyond your own blog
Good external material starts with a problem common to the audiences of both parties.
A WordPress agency can prepare a troubleshooting guide with the hosting provider. A content expert can describe the process of reworking the offer with the contractor. A plugin creator can invite an implementer to demonstrate practical configuration.
When choosing a topic, ask yourself:
Would the partner recommend this material to their audience due to its usefulness?
The publication can bring traffic, reach a new group, and confirm expertise. The impact on AI recommendations should be monitored separately. The number of external mentions is not an automatic measure of GEO effectiveness.
10. Automate content work according to established rules
Regular blogging requires selecting topics, preparing materials, publishing, and updating. These are areas where automation can help.
First, however, define the standard:
- what information about the company we use
- which sources we consider reliable
- which statements we do not publish without confirmation
- which topics require expert verification
- how we detect duplicate articles
- who is responsible for correcting the error
Google notes that generating many pages without value for users may violate guidelines regarding abuse related to large-scale content creation. It recommends ensuring accuracy, quality, and relevance even with automation.Google's guidelines on AI content
In Semly, the AI agent Leon can independently select topics, prepare articles, and publish them through integration with WordPress. This allows automating the work from topic selection to publication.
The effectiveness of such a process should be assessed by the usefulness of the content, alignment with the offer, presence in AI responses, and visitor actions. The sheer number of published entries describes the scale of work.
11. Measure mentions, citations, and inquiries separately
GEO results can be easily misinterpreted if different events are lumped into one number.
| Event | What it means |
|---|---|
| Mention | The company name appeared in the response |
| Recommendation | The company was indicated as a possible solution to the need |
| Citation | A specific address was provided as the source |
| Visit | User navigated to the page |
| Query | User performed an action significant for sales |
The brand can be mentioned without recommendation. The article can be quoted without indicating the company as the executor. The visit may end with reading the guide without contact.
Use a similar set of questions and conditions for comparing results. Record dates, language, platform, available model identifier, and information about using web search.
Repeat checks in new conversations. Describe results along with sample size, for example:
“The company appeared in 8 out of 40 registered responses to questions without brand name.”
This is an example of reporting, not a Semly study result. Such information is more precise than the general “we have 20% visibility in AI.”
Analyze sources of visits and conversions on the site separately. Google includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in overall data type “Network” in Search Console, so the entire increase in clicks should not be attributed to AI features.Google's measurement information

Frequently Asked Questions about GEO for WordPress - FAQ
Do I need a special GEO plugin?
First, it's worth checking the capabilities of the current configuration. Part of the work relates to SEO settings, while another part concerns company information, content quality, and measurement. An additional tool should address a specific need, such as response monitoring or publication automation.
Is the llms.txt file enough for AI to recommend the site?
It should not be treated as a guarantee of recommendations. Google does not require a special file for presence in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The priority should be site availability, accurate information, and useful materials. Google documentation
Can articles created by AI support GEO?
They can be part of the process if they provide valuable and accurate information. It's important to evaluate their alignment with the offer, sources, original contribution, and usefulness for the audience.
How quickly can results be seen?
There is no single timeline for all sites and platforms. In the first week, a baseline measurement can be taken, settings can be improved, and content can be published. Visibility changes require later observations, and a single AI response does not confirm a lasting effect.
Where to start with limited time?
Check the current visibility of the brand, the availability of key pages, and the quality of the main offering. Then choose one frequently asked customer question that your site does not yet answer well.
Check your company's visibility in AI
Before planning further publications, check the starting point. Does AI consider your brand and how does it present it?
