Check whether AI sees your business

You have an optimized website, blog content and a history of working with an agency. Yet visits are falling. “I've already done SEO” describes past work. It does not establish whether your offer is visible where customers make decisions today.
That does not mean earlier SEO has lost all value. Identify what still helps, what needs updating and what ranking reports miss. This article helps you review those questions before spending again.
The same ranking can bring a different number of clicks
In an analysis published February 4, 2026, Ahrefs estimated that AI Overviews were associated with about 58% lower average CTR for the first result compared with a modeled level without the additional impact of AI summaries. CTR is clicks divided by impressions.
The analysis covered 300,000 keywords and aggregated desktop Search Console data, comparing December 2023 with December 2025. There were two groups of 150,000 queries: those with an AI summary in 2025 and informational queries without one.
| Query group in Ahrefs analysis | Position 1 CTR, Dec 2023 | Position 1 CTR, Dec 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Queries with an AI Overview in Dec 2025 | about 7.3% | about 1.6% |
| Informational queries without an AI Overview | about 7.6% | about 3.9% |

The 58% figure comes from a comparative model, not the simple change between 7.3% and 1.6%. Nor is it a prediction that your business will lose 58% of sales. It explains why rankings alone cannot assess performance.
SEO still has value. A one-time implementation is not an ongoing strategy
Google confirms that SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its generative features. Technical accessibility and valuable content still matter. Google does not require special schema.org markup or an extra AI file that would ensure inclusion in answers.

You can have sound technical foundations and still need changes. Your offer may have expanded, products acquired new versions, or prices, delivery terms and selection criteria changed. Old content does not update itself as your business evolves.
The same applies to topic planning. An article can answer a past need correctly but fail to help with today's product choice. Assess the customer's question and the answer's usefulness, not just word count.
What to review in your existing strategy
| Area | Question for your business or agency | Review outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Offer | Does the content describe products and services we sell today? | Pages needing updates. |
| Customer needs | Do we answer questions about choice, applications and limitations? | Missing answers assigned to relevant pages. |
| Measurement | Does the report cover clicks and business goals, or only rankings? | Agreed indicators and comparable periods. |
| Business information | Are name, offer and terms consistent across important sources? | Contradictions to resolve. |
| AI answers | Does the business appear in questions without its name? | Separate assessment of recommendations, descriptions and sources. |
This is a proposed strategy review, not a list of factors guaranteeing Google rankings or AI recommendations.
Why an SEO report does not answer every question
Ranking well for a selected query is different from being recommended for a need described in a conversation. A customer may request a solution matching a budget, an application and several constraints at once.
If you report only rankings, you do not know whether an AI answer mentions your brand or describes it correctly. Consider this additional area alongside Google performance and sales.
Do not replace one simplification with another. Citation counts do not tell you how many people purchased either. A visibility report should help choose a change, not pretend to measure all revenue.
How to prepare a brief before spending again
Instead of asking to “improve SEO,” describe a specific need. For example, a new service is available but the content does not explain when to choose it. The agency should identify the right pages, missing information, implementation and evaluation.
The following questions are example material for a conversation with a provider. They do not come from any account or brand measurements.
Which pages need updating, and why? Which customer need lacks a useful answer? What do we keep from past work? What will we implement? How will we assess it? What are the limits of that assessment?
Ask to separate technical repairs, changes to the offer and content development. Not every gap needs a new article. An existing product, category or service page may be a better home.
Why Semly helps with this review
Semly helps check how a brand is described and compared with competitors in supported AI environments, and which sources appear in answers. This measurement can supplement an SEO strategy review.
Feature description:Semly - public information about monitoring
Start with the free report. Use it to ask whether your business appears, whether the offer is described correctly and what information needs adding. Do not judge all the agency's work from a single result.
Keep what works and update what has changed
Past investment may still be useful. Further decisions should follow today's offer, customer needs and data, rather than assuming everything must be redone.
A useful review ends with a specific page, a necessary improvement, an owner and a way to check results. This gives monitoring a practical purpose.

Frequently asked questions
Is SEO from a few years ago worthless? No. Evaluate how current each element is and what results it delivers today.
Should SEO be replaced with GEO? Do not treat this as choosing only one channel. Identify needs and environments your current strategy does not cover.
Will a new AI file alone fix visibility? There is no guarantee. Start with website accessibility and information quality.
